Following the release of Mac OS X 10.6.5, Apple is now making available printer driver updates for a variety of models in Software Update.
The update package installs the latest printer, fax and scanner drivers specific to the devices the user has installed. The driver update does not appear unless the 10.6.5 update has been applied.
For a system with an HP printer installed, Apple only delivers the updated drivers for HP devices, reducing the need for gigabytes of disk space to be consumed by irrelevant printer software.
Apple details the models supported in its latest driver update in a support document. The list includes printer software released as of November 3, 2010.
The update includes third party printer software for over fifteen brands of printers, in addition to general purpose CUPS and Gutenprint (formerly Gimp Print) drivers created by the open source community to support a variety of other, older or discontinued printers from over ten other vendors.
Apple acquired the code for CUPS in 2007, and continues to maintain the open source project for Mac OS X and other Unix and Unix-like operating systems including Linux and BSD.
Apple now maintains printer driver updates for Snow Leopard
One example print software package, for the HP Photosmart C7200 series, initially shipped with Snow Leopard as version 4.0, later updated by Apple to 4.0.2. The latest update brings the software for this printer to 4.2, the newest version HP offers.
HP's own website now directs users to obtain their software driver updates through Snow Leopard's Software Update, listing only a year old version of the company's drivers in a package that includes utility software and custom scanner software, and older versions for previous releases of Mac OS X.
Apple changed the printing architecture in Snow Leopard enough to require updated new printer drivers for existing devices, and announced that it would be updating user's printer drivers via Software Update at regular intervals instead of leaving users to hunt down their own driver updates.

- The Apple support document claims one of my printer drivers has been updated...but it's not showing up in Software Update. Maybe later this evening?
AppleInsider is the first to carry this story so maybe they jumped the gun and Apple hasn't populated SU yet. - I had new HP printer drivers when I updated to 10.6.5 On Wednesday. However, I'm confused that Apple would want to be responsible for pushing printer drivers, but not be responsible for things like Flash and Java. I thought they were going more for a 'download the latest from the other's website'

They just deploy the printer drivers. They don't write them. Apple actually wrote Java for OS X. This may be available through the new App Store when Oracle starts releasing the OS X version. They are hardly the same don't you think. Optional software vs required device drivers? - I installed them... but I'm hoping they work this time. I updated to HP 2.4.2 twice and both times,both my all in one printers just refused to work.

I'm concerned that these will re-disable AirPrint. - I was able to print OK on my DeskJet 3425 after installing the 2.5.2 last November but yesterday, trying to print for the first time after installing 10.6.6, I got an error message about the black cartridge being faulty or imcompatible. I replaced the cartridge, but with the same result. Ditto with trying to connect my Macbook Pro (which also had been updated to 10.6.6) and print

So, today MU 'reposted' this HP PRinter Driver 5.1 update, rebranding it with a December 27, 2018 date. This update was released by Apple on October 24, 2017 (2017, not 2018), making it over a year old. Don't believe me? Or MU doesn't realize it is not a new update? Either way that doesn't say much about the MU internal process. I've seen many instances of updates on MU being reposted as 'new' but are really old updates, or updates that were released weeks or months before the posting date on MU, as if MU just got around to it or wasn't aware until much after the fact that an update was available. I know I'm not the only one who has noticed and commented on this. conversely, there are important updates that users should be notified about immediately that MU isn't even aware of. I think MU relies mainly on user posts to be alerted when new updates are available.And MU wonders why people don't pluck down money for the paid version of the MU software/service. The only rational explanation I can think of as to why MU reposts old updates as new, is the argument that it is a public service to make people aware of important updates, so it triggers or comes up on peoples watch list. But that is bogus, because for the people that already have the update, it's wasting their time to receive a notices about old updates, only to find they already have that update, and in most cases, like this one, received it AGES AGO (in software time).Now, it is true HP no longer provides drivers for out of the box anymore or directly online. If you purchase an HP in the last year or so, you are instructed to visit the HP website and are guided to download the terrible HP Easy Start software, which is nothing but a downloader stub. The problem with that is the Easy Start stub not only downloads the proper driver, but then proceeds to insist on installing tons of crap ware, 'customer feedback' software (aka telemetry spyware), and sign you up for the HP ink program, and so on. Good luck trying to locate the actual downloaded driver files only if you want to keep a copy for later offline install or backup. so, definitely, get a copy of the version 5.1 if you don't already have it, it will likely be the last from Apple. Fortunately, there hasn't been any radical change in the printer driver architecture under OSX / macOS, and at least for me, the drivers on this 5.1 update have worked on every release from Mavericks to Mojave. AVOID the HP Easy Start downloader if you can.
